What are the Next Steps After the Summit?
Using the information acquired from the summit, short-term and long-term strategies will be developed to help Quad City baby boomers:
“create a social legacy of profound importance. Their added years of life [average 18] gives them the chance. Their experiences in life give them the capability. And the need to come to terms with the world in a way that brings integrity to their life gives them the psychological incentive."
Reinventing Aging: Baby Boomers and Civic Engagement, Harvard School of Public Health-MetLife Foundation Initiative on Retirement and Civic Engagement, p. 6, 2004.
Additional, focus groups and educational programming in the following areas are under consideration:
- Focus groups engaging community leaders sponsoring volunteer programs through the workplace.
- Town hall meetings with tourism, economic development agencies and citizens discussing neighbor-to-neighbor volunteerism and its impact on developing a “community personality” that can keep people in our community and recruit new members to it.
- Education of baby boomers on the increased health benefits of volunteering.
